2nd February 2001

It looks like I’ll be heading back to Amsterdam in a week or so.

Today, I sat in the filthy stench of the social security office and looked at the security guards and bullet-proof glass for an hour for nothing. Such is life.

So, anyway, it’ll be a couple of weeks yet before I can get paid in hard US currency and pay it into an American bank. I suppose I’ll need to reschedule my flight on Monday and try to get out of here around 11th February.

Being in Amsterdam again will be strange, but nicer this time. It will be unclear when I might be in The Netherlands again, the thought of which leaves me feeling a little wistful.

I’m planning to box up a lot of my books and CDs and have them shipped over to San Francisco. I’ve missed a lot of my books since I’ve been here, but strangely, I’ve missed very little else. That’s why I’ll be leaving pretty much all my other stuff there. If I don’t miss it, what’s the point of having it close at hand?

The boss lent me his old DVD player earlier this week, which is a very cool thing to have. Now I can finally watch that copy of Fight Club I got for Sysadmin Day last year.

Work continues to keep me busy, and I seem to have rediscovered my lust for Linux.

1.5.9 of Linuxcare’s bootable business card should be out within the next few days, which features, amongst other things, some bash completion fixes.

I should be getting a wireless PCMCIA Ethernet card in the next couple of days, which will be very cool. Pretty much every piece of hardware in my ThinkPad (including the infrared port) now works under Linux, except USB, which refuses to accept input from my keyboard.
