Well, Sarah has made it to full-term, the medical term for a foetus that has gestated for the full duration of normal pregnancy. This is defined by the medical community as 37 weeks. Our own belief, however, is that Franbert won’t be ready for birth until he and Sarah’s body have decided that the moment for labour has arrived. The longer he’s inside, the more ripe his lungs will be and the fewer problems we’re likely to have with breastfeeding. So, we’re still thinking of 40 weeks as being the ideal duration for gestation.
I had to get up early today for an appoinment at Lucile Packard Hospital, where they have a complimentary car-seat fitting service. 4 out of every 5 car-seats in the USA are fitted incorrectly and this is something you don’t want to get wrong, so we had a professional fit our SnugRide into the middle of the back seat.
The car-seat is yet another sign that this really is happening to us. It’s odd to look at the small space in the seat and think that a brand new human-being will be occupying it within a few weeks. Wow.
We’ve also picked up our birthing pool and will be setting that up this weekend. The next few days will see us washing cloth nappies and baby clothes, as we make the final preparations for Franbert’s arrival. There’s not much else left to do, apart from recharge the batteries of our digital camera and erase the memory cards, so that we can record the momentous occasion for posterity.
