Born in Ireland and raised in Cornwall, a coastal rural county in the far south-west of England, I played guitar and entertained dreams of fame, fortune and the undying adulation of gaunt gothic girls in black clothing. Realising this quest would never see fruition in the sleepy backwaters of England's green and unpleasant land, I set off in 1986 to try my luck in the nation's capital.
I remained in London until 1991, frustrated at and weary of being perpetually barely able to make ends meet. The sinking ship of England, skippered by the delusional despot and mad cow known as Margaret Thatcher, had been my home for 24 years, but enough was enough. I would soon leave England, never to make my abode there again.
I hung around long enough to see Kraftwerk on their summer of '91 tour, then packed my bags and headed to Amsterdam, capital city of The Netherlands. I was naturalised as a Dutch citizen in February 2000.
I met Sarah at the end of the millennium and the long dormant spirit of adventure possessed me once more. I decided to temporarily relocate to the USA, where the dot-com boom was in full swing and my knowledge of Linux and the profession of computer system adminsitration might land me the kind of exciting job not commonly found in the more shy and retiring Netherlands.
In March of 2000, I took a job as Senior System Administrator with Linuxcare in San Francisco, where I remained for a year and a half until the company's future was looking uncertain.
At the beginning of July 2001, I switched jobs and took up a position with Google in Mountain View, California as a System Administrator. The senior disappeared from my title in the process, along with a chunk of financial remuneration, but at least the company's business model was sound. I could, however, have no idea just how sound.
The chief advantage of living in California is that you can wear sandals, shorts and a T-shirt in November. Try that in Amsterdam and see how far you get. California also has bloody good hamburgers and milkshakes.
In 2002, I married Sarah in the sleepy village of Port Clyde, in the American state of Maine.
In May 2005, our first child, Eloïse, was born. Of all of my projects, she's the one I'm most proud of.
In August 2005, the family moved back to Amsterdam. Coincidentally, I went on indefinite sabbatical from Google.
In December 2005, we purchased a house near, solidifying our new base in The Netherlands.
In June 2006, Google and I officially parted, which left me in a state of semi-retirement. The semi- simply means that I'm not yet sure it's forever, as I still harbour the odd ambition or two.
I now tinker full-time with Linux and the Ruby programming language.
