Hello there, visitor from , and welcome to Caliban, maintained by Ian Macdonald and Sarah McKenna.

News

Sarah and I are off to Amsterdam for a week at the end of April. This will be her first Koninginnedag, so we're hoping for mooi weer.

Sarah and I will be making our second trip to Iceland in August. Rather than touring the whole country, this time we'll be spending just a few days in the capital of Reykjavík and then a few more in the town of Heimaey on the island of Vestmannaeyjar, located just off the south coast of the country. The latter destination will allow us to enjoy the unique thrill of the first flight of the year's pufflings from the cliffs above Heimaey.

Punctuating those two excursions will be ten or so days on the Faroe Islands, or Føroyar as their inhabitants know them, one of the lesser visited European countries. If you've never heard of the place and have no idea what the islands are like, have a look at these photos.

bash completion

bash completion is a collection of shell functions that allow the tab completion functionality of the GNU bash shell to be arbitrarily extended. This project is rated one of the top 20 by Freshmeat users.

Ruby

The Ruby programming language is quickly gaining ground as an all-purpose, fully object-oriented scripting language. After many years as a Perl programmer, I have now made the transition to Ruby and written a number of extensions and programs, all of which are freely available.

Amstrad PCW

The PCW content has not seen any updates in a long while, but remains available and probably always will. There actually isn't much to update these days, though, as the PCW front is rather quiet. I'm unable to answer PCW-related queries these days, I'm afraid, as it's been about six years since I used one and much of my knowledge has atrophied.

The last 3 years in a nutshell

After 9 years in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Ian moved to the USA in March 2000 to take a job as Senior System Administrator with Linuxcare in San Francisco. Ian and Sarah got together in May 2000 and moved to Palo Alto in August 2001 to be closer to Ian's current job at Google. At the end of June 2002, Ian and Sarah moved again, this time to Menlo Park. In October 2003, Ian and Sarah moved one last time, this time to Mountain View.

The future

Life in California has its perks, but ultimately, it's not for me. It's in the wrong country for a start.

Whilst we have no immediate plans to move, I welcome contact from companies and recruitment agencies with offers of interesting and challenging work in the vicinity of Amsterdam. Offers should concern senior system administration positions involving Linux and other free software and open source technologies.
